July 4, 2002 Gertrude Burt passed away at the awesome age of 94. I can't believe 12 years have passed. She was an amazing grandmother. Always so much fun. She was a wonderful mom too and instilled in my mom a love for motherhood that I adopted as well. At the time that she died, we were living in Atlanta and could not get back to Muncie in time to see her. I said goodbye over the phone and she responded in her usual 94 year old hard-of-hearing way "are you still there? I can't hear anything!" It was cute and endearing and just so Gerty. I told her I loved her and said bye, laughing through the tears.
My mom got here today, and I am glad we got to spend the 4th together. It is always a tough day for her even all these years later.
And today has been tough for me too for lots of reasons. Emotions are right at the surface and some days the littlest thing starts the tears. Today was one of those. Friendships are changing. Distance is tough. The ups and downs of this new way of life with its unpredictability can make a person feel exhausted. Feeling even more out of touch as I made some tough choices today about limiting social media for now.
But today more than anything I remember a great woman. I am thankful for the time I had growing up near both of my grandmas. Such precious memories. And with that, I say goodnight and happy 4th (though it is already the 5th now...)
